When it mattered

Small premiums. Real moments.

Children playing outdoors
£600 Plus level · major broken bone

"A tackle at Sunday football, one broken arm. The payout covered the two days I took off work for A&E and the fracture clinic — and a new pair of boots for when the cast came off."

— Parent of an 11-year-old, Manchester
Mother carrying her child
£1,050 Plus level · 3 nights in ICU + ward

"When our daughter was admitted, money was the last thing we wanted to think about. Hospital parking, meals, my partner off work — the daily hospital benefit quietly took care of it all."

— Family of three, Birmingham
Happy girl walking with her umbrella in the rain
£10,000 Plus level · Type 1 diabetes diagnosis

"The diagnosis changed everything overnight. The lump sum meant I could drop to part-time for six months while we learned to manage it as a family, without panicking about the mortgage."

Your options — whole of market

Three ways to protect a child

We're whole-of-market advisers, so before we talk about ChildShield, here's the full picture. There are three routes to protecting your children financially — and the right one depends on your family. We'll always help you choose.

1

Children's cover inside your own policy

Most insurers — Aviva, Legal & General, Zurich, Royal London and others — let you add children's critical illness cover onto a policy you take out for yourself. Often excellent value if you're already covering your own life or income.

Best if you're insuring yourself too
2

Accident cover with a child add-on

Adult accident and hospital cover with children added on. Covers broken bones and hospital stays with no health questions — but the children's element rides on an adult policy you hold.

Best for everyday accident risks
3

Standalone child-only cover

One product covers your children on their own — no policy needed for you. It's the only standalone child protection policy in the UK market, and the gap most families never knew existed. That's ChildShield, and it's what this page is about.

No policy needed for you

Not sure which route fits your family? Our free protection review will look at what you already have and tell you honestly — and our free parent webinars walk through all three options in detail.

What's covered

Clear benefits. Cash paid to you.

No limit on claims, no limit on children, and making a claim never increases your premium.

What's not covered

Every insurance policy has exclusions. We'd rather you knew them before you buy than after you claim.

Cover for accidents and accident-related hospital stays starts as soon as the policy is live. Hospitalisation due to illness, self-inflicted injuries and pregnancy-related complications are covered once the policy has been held for 12 months. Serious conditions (such as cancer or Type 1 diabetes) are subject to a 90-day waiting period from the policy start date.
Hospital stays outside the UK are not covered. Accidents occurring in countries where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all travel are excluded, as are injuries arising from illegal acts, or where alcohol or drugs are a contributing factor. Routine care of a newborn in hospital after birth is not covered.
Benefits are payable for the conditions as defined in the Policy Terms and Conditions. For example, broken noses, micro-fractures and bruised bones are not covered; viral meningitis is not covered (bacterial meningitis is); and only cancers meeting the policy definitions are covered. Broken bones caused by an underlying illness or degenerative bone disorder are excluded. Always read the Policy Summary and Terms & Conditions linked above before applying.

Questions parents ask us

No — that's what makes this product different. It's the only standalone child protection policy in the UK market. You don't need any other insurance, with anyone, to take it out.
All of them — under one policy, at one price. That includes stepchildren and children who don't live with you. Each child is covered until their 23rd birthday. You need at least one child under 17 when you apply.
Really. There's no medical underwriting at all — nothing to disclose, no forms from your GP, no exclusions added based on your child's history. Waiting periods apply to illness-related benefits instead (see "What's not covered" above).
Valid claims are typically paid within five working days. There's no limit to the number of claims you can make, and making a claim doesn't increase your premium.
Yes — each parent can hold their own policy, and in the event of a claim, each policy pays out. Many separated parents each hold a policy for this reason.
No fixed term, no tie-in. Cancel within the first 30 days for a full refund of premiums paid (provided you haven't claimed), or at any time after that. The policy naturally ends when your youngest child turns 23.
It depends on your circumstances. If you're also considering life cover or critical illness cover for yourself, many insurers include children's cover within those policies — and as whole-of-market advisers, we can compare all of them for you. That's exactly what our free protection review is for. If you're unsure, message us on WhatsApp or email childcover@feadviser.co.uk before applying — it costs nothing.
Free · No obligation
