When it mattered — real claims

Small premiums. Real payouts.

£115,500 Core Cover · broken bones + 32 days in hospital

Mr G, a self-employed HGV driver, was hit by a lorry while checking his vehicle at the roadside. He broke 20 major bones, 14 spinal bones and more, and spent 32 days in hospital. With no employer sick pay to fall back on, MetLife's payout carried him and his family through.

£3,780 Child Cover · 80 days in hospital with sepsis

Mr and Mrs C's son was diagnosed with a bacterial infection and sepsis, spending 18 days in hospital and then a further 62 after being readmitted. Both parents had added Child Cover to their policies — MetLife paid the hospitalisation benefit within 5 working days.

£5,000 Active Lifestyle Cover · grade-3 ligament tear

Mr R, a joiner, tore his anterior cruciate ligament playing amateur rugby at the weekend. Because he held five units with Active Lifestyle Cover, MetLife paid the full complete-ligament-tear benefit — money for the months his knee kept him off the tools.

Real MetLife claims, anonymised, taken from the MetLife Claims Case Study Booklet 2026 and EverydayProtect sales materials. Payout amounts reflect the number of units each policyholder held and the policy terms in force at the time of their claim. Claims are always assessed against the Policy Terms and Conditions.

Your options — whole of market

Three ways to protect yourself if accident or illness strikes

We're whole-of-market advisers, so before we talk about EverydayProtect, here's the honest picture. There are three main routes to protecting your income and your family — and the right one depends on your health, your job and your budget. We'll always help you choose.

1

Income protection

Pays a monthly income if illness or injury stops you working, until you return or retire. Offered by Aviva, Legal & General, Royal London, Vitality and others. Medically underwritten — your health, occupation and smoking status set the price, and some people are declined or rated.

Best for replacing a salary long-term
2

Critical illness cover

A one-off lump sum if you're diagnosed with a specified serious illness such as cancer, heart attack or stroke — usually bought alongside life cover. Also medically underwritten, with exclusions possible for pre-existing conditions.

Best for serious diagnoses
3

Accident & hospital cash cover

Fixed cash payouts for defined events — broken bones, hospital stays, serious injuries — with no health questions, no GP reports and cover that starts immediately. That's EverydayProtect, and it's what this page is about. It sits alongside the other two, or is the realistic starting point when underwritten cover is unaffordable or unavailable.

Best for everyday accidents & hospital stays

Being straight with you: EverydayProtect is not a replacement for income protection or life insurance. If you're not sure which route fits, our free protection review will look at what you already have and tell you honestly — no charge, no obligation.

What's covered

Clear benefits. Cash paid to you.

Spend it however you need — bills, mortgage, childcare, physio, time off. Claiming never increases your premium, and you can claim for multiple injuries from one accident.

Units 2, 3 and 4 sit proportionally in between — every benefit is simply multiplied by your number of units. Core and Active Lifestyle benefits reduce by 50% from your 70th birthday and the policy ends at 75. Full definitions and exclusions are in the Policy Summary and Summary of Benefits.

What's not covered

Every insurance policy has exclusions. We'd rather you knew them before you buy than after you claim.

Cover for accidents — injuries and accident-related hospital stays — starts as soon as the policy is live. Hospital stays due to sickness, and pregnancy-related complications (minimum 5 complete days), are covered once the policy has been held for 12 months. Under Child Cover, no cancer benefit is payable if the child was diagnosed, or had tests or investigations leading to a diagnosis, before the policy started or within 90 days of the cover start date. Core and Active Lifestyle benefits reduce by 50% from your 70th birthday, and the policy ends at 75.
The policy doesn't cover: psychiatric illness, depression, anxiety or stress-related conditions; suicide or self-inflicted injury by the policyholder; injuries from illegal acts including road traffic offences; playing professional sport or taking part in contests of speed; military-specific duties (including reserves); war; assault or fighting; injuries where alcohol or drugs were a significant factor; certain occupational activities specified in the Terms & Conditions; aerial flight other than as a passenger or crew of a licensed airline; and hospital stays outside the UK or for optional surgery (except voluntary organ donation).
Benefits are payable for events as defined in the Policy Terms and Conditions. Broken noses, stress fractures, micro-fractures and bruised bones aren't covered, nor are breaks caused by osteoporosis or degenerative bone disorders. Hospital stays must last at least 24 hours. Active Lifestyle Cover pays for one dislocation and one tendon rupture or ligament tear per policy year; dislocations must involve surgical intervention or manipulation in a hospital setting, and finger, thumb and toe dislocations are excluded. The most payable for any single insured event is £50,000 per unit (Core) / £5,000 per unit (Child Cover) — if that maximum is reached, the policy ends. Always read the Policy Summary and Terms & Conditions linked above before applying.

Questions people ask us

Really. There's no medical underwriting at all — nothing to disclose, no GP reports, and your price isn't based on your health, occupation or smoking status. Waiting periods apply to sickness-related hospital stays instead (see "What's not covered" above).
One unit of Core Cover costs £11 a month and sets the base benefit amounts. Every extra unit multiplies both — so 3 units costs £33 a month and pays three times the benefit, up to a maximum of 5 units. Optional Child Cover and Active Lifestyle Cover each add £2 per unit per month and scale the same way.
Yes — optional Child Cover protects all your children under one add-on, from birth to their 23rd birthday, including stepchildren and children who don't live with you (they must be UK residents). It includes broken bones, hospital stays and a cancer benefit. You need at least one child under 18 to add it, and you can remove it at any time.
The maximum across MetLife EverydayProtect, MultiProtect and Accident Protection policies is 5 units in total. If you hold fewer than 5, a new policy can top you up — units can't be added to an existing policy. A new policy has its own waiting periods, and it's rarely in your interest to cancel and replace an existing policy, so tell us what you hold and we'll check the numbers before you commit.
No. Claiming never increases your premium, and neither does getting older. You can claim for multiple injuries from one accident, subject to the single-event maximum of £50,000 per unit. MetLife can review premiums across all policyholders no more than every 5 years — never based on your individual circumstances.
No fixed term, no tie-in. Cancel within the first 30 days for a full refund of premiums paid (provided you haven't claimed), or at any time after that. Optional covers can be removed at any time and your premium reduces accordingly.
Core Cover and Active Lifestyle benefits reduce by 50% from your 70th birthday — MetLife writes to you beforehand — and the policy ends at your 75th birthday. Child Cover ends for each child at their 23rd birthday.
No — and we'll always be straight about that. Income protection replaces a monthly salary until you're back at work; EverydayProtect pays fixed cash lump sums for defined events, with no health questions. For many people the right answer is income protection, EverydayProtect, or both. That's exactly what our free whole-of-market review is for — message us on WhatsApp or email childcover@feadviser.co.uk before applying if you're unsure. It costs nothing.
